Nerdy Mom-To-Be: Nerbies!
Nerd + babies = Nerbies!
Figured I’d take two things I love (nerdy stuff and my soon-to-be born baby) and merge the two to create Nerbies!
Posts about geeky and adorable baby stuff (clothes, furniture, nurseries), as well as personal experiences/tips/tricks I’ve had so far being preggers and how I’ve approached being a nerdy mom-to-be. Tips on sites to visit, books to buy, fashion for yourself and your youngster, and all with a geeky flair :-)
First up? Zelda nursery!
I’ve been DYING to create a Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time themed nursery for the little boy that heading my way. I have an Bachelor of Fine Arts degree (aka: I’m a painter) and had grandiose concepts floating around in my head for murals I wanted to paint on the walls. Then I saw this video and it cemented my Ocarina nursery dementia:
Then I read the video description: 3 months of work. Ugh - EXHAUSTING. As it is, I can barely make it through the day without taking a 3 hour nap. How am I going to have enough energy to paint an entire room? As it is, I’ve only got 5 months to go, so that’s cutting it a bit short. Plus that doesn’t take into account sanding the walls, adding a primer, drawing the image, making sure I nab the right paint..blah..blah…the more I looked at the video, the more excuses I I could come up with. The compromise? Have painters come in to paint the wall a nice light green color and add accents of Legend of Zelda throughout. That way, it won’t be overwhelming either as a project or as a decor. Still adorable when my son is a baby and easily adjustable when he’s a toddler.
In this regards, Etsy.com is a GOLD MINE. They have an amazing assortment of video game themed baby items, whether you’re looking for LoZ or some other title. Some of the items that I’ve added to my faves and are planning to buy are:
Legend of Zelda lap quilt: Perfect for baby to lay on if you have hard wood floors.
Link Onesie! (there are a variety of types. One that is available has a hand-stitched quality while this image looks to be exclusively printed-on/screened). Either way, both are adorable.
Triforce Baby Booties: I can NOT express how utterly adorable I find these! I’ll be honest, I have no idea if these are actually practical or not. They look like they would stay on, but who knows? That being said, I’m willing to take the risk, just to have something that ridiculously adorable within the house!
Triforce night light/table lamp: Even if I wasn’t having a baby, would still buy this just to have in my home. This things looks SO COOL! (This lamp can also be hung up).
**Note: I have NOT purchased anything from any of these buyers yet, so can not vouch for their reputation as sellers. Buyer beware.
Personal LoZ projects:
Some other ideas I have for the nursery:
- Create a Navi-inspired mobile (grab some blue puffballs, toss on some fairy wings and hang from the ceiling. Annoying voice not included (or necessary).
- LoZ chest/toy box (find large enough wooden chest. DONE! LOL. Master Key chest…ehhh, that’s a diff. story).
- Various cross-stitch murals. (Perfect to occupy yourself with and feel like you’re actually contributing to the baby’s room rather than just buying “stuff”). I can not recommend SpriteStitch.com enough! They not only have some amazing cross stitching to inspire you but they focus on a TON if video game crafts above and beyond just needle & thread.
With 5 months to go, I’m going to start focusing on arranging the baby room now and cracking my knuckles in prep for some stitching! I’ll make sure and post the finished project!
MEGA MAN GONE FLEECE
With Halloween just weeks away, it’s time to think about a costume. Sure, you could go as Slender, Pyramid Head or any slew of other characters or you could take inspiration from Game Punk Arts and go old school with one of his fleece Mega Man helmets.
The detail is spot-on and since it’s fleece, it will keep you warm on those cold nights when your trick or treating or fighting robots. Dr. Light would approve.
The helmets range in price and can be found on his Etsy.
If you’re not big on going out for Halloween, why don’t you stay indoors and scare yourself stupid by playing SCP-087 or SCP-Containment Breach.
